About this place
Maunsel House stands near the hamlet of North Newton in the Somerset parish of North Petherton.
This Grade II* listed manor house has been the ancestral seat of the Slade family for generations.
The surviving structure dates mainly from the late 14th or early 15th century, though tradition suggests an earlier house occupied the site.
Sir Benjamin Julian Alfred Slade, 7th Baronet, the current owner, has devoted recent decades to restoring the house.
Visits are by arrangement through the estate, which also hosts weddings and events in the grounds.
History
The surviving structure dates mainly from the late 14th or early 15th century. Local tradition holds that a house has occupied the site since the 13th century, though this remains unconfirmed by archaeological evidence. The manor has remained the family seat of the Slade baronets for generations, passing down through the line to its present owner, Sir Benjamin Slade.
Architecture
The house is Grade II* listed and displays the layered building work typical of a long-inhabited manor, with medieval origins overlaid by later alterations. A modern programme of restoration is underway under the current owner.
