About this place
Monteviot House is an early 18th century home on the banks of the River Teviot near Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders.
It remains a lived-in family house, open to the public for July only.
The gardens run on a longer season and are the real draw, featuring a water garden of linked islands, a rose garden, and a feature known as the Garden of Persistent Imagination.
The house and garden are part of the Historic Houses network.
History
The house has been the seat of the Marquess of Lothian, a title held by the Kerr family, since the early 18th century. The family's long tenure means the house has stayed a working home rather than a museum piece.
Architecture
The house dates from the early 18th century and has been extended and altered over the generations it has housed the Lothian family, giving it a layered rather than single-period appearance.
Gardens & grounds
The grounds include a rose garden, a herb garden, a water garden of islands linked by bridges, a heritage arboretum, and views down to the River Teviot.
