About this place
The oldest part of Monzie Castle dates from 1634, an L-plan tower house standing two miles north-east of Crieff in Perth and Kinross.
The house was extended into a castellated mansion in 1795, giving it the layered look it has today.
A serious fire in 1908 gutted the later portions, leaving only the outer walls standing, and the interior was rebuilt soon after.
Monzie Castle is a member property of Historic Houses, and members can visit free of charge during its open season.
History
The Campbell family held Monzie Castle from early times until 1869, when it passed to the Johnstones of Lathrisk. The 1795 extension was designed by John Paterson, who trained with Robert Adam. Fire tore through the building in 1908 and left only the shell of the later sections intact.
Architecture
Monzie Castle is a category A listed castellated mansion combining a small early 17th-century L-plan tower house with a larger 1795 extension. The exterior reads as two distinct periods, while the interior dates almost entirely from a 1908 rebuild.
Worth knowing
After the 1908 fire, the Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer was brought in to restore the castle, and he used the project to showcase the work of Edinburgh craftsmen and workshops he championed throughout his career.
